Stu, hailing from bluntmagza's home town of Hout Bay, won the first Red Bull Downhill Extreme (DHX) in Cape Town 1999 on a regular street board with some big-ass wheels and then went on to a solid career as a downhill racing pro, winning the IGSA world title in 2003. Twenty One Children kicked off the music line-up, with their nostalgic rock-inspired sound igniting a mosh pit filled with backflips, kickflips, headbanging and crowd surfing. “When you bring people together who eat concrete for a living, they’re going to go hard,” said photographer Dick Smith.

Manic sessions, mosh pits, and madness at Skate Noise JHB 🛹🎧

Part 1: chaos and carnage during the skate sessions

On Saturday 27 July, around 2,500 people flocked to 1 Fox in Braamfontein to attend Skate Noise JHB. This epic collision of skateboarding and music, put on by Spotify, was reminiscent of late 90s and early 00s skate contests when skatepunk culture was in its prime.

Blue Galore was the first to put his wheels to the ramps and stuck some big tricks from the get-go. Others followed suit and soon the sweet sounds of skateboarding filled every corner of 1 Fox’s industrial warehouse… It had begun.

Pretoria’s first public skatepark: Turning a problem into a promise of hope in Mamelodi township🛹

What started as a simple Instagram message from Poelo Mofolo of Mamelodi Skate Club in Minister Dean MacPherson’s inbox has now turned into the allocation of land for Pretoria’s first public skatepark in Mamelodi.

On the morning of 30 July 2024, MacPherson, the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure and the City of Tshwane’s MMC of Human Settlements met with other governmental officials, members of the community and local skaters, to discuss the official decision to allocate land in Mamelodi.

SA skateboarding lost one of its own this month. Standout Kimberley skater Damian Bramley sadly passed away last week. A real fearless ripper on all terrain who excelled on transition, he was a humble guy with a big smile who loved to share his passion for skateboarding with everyone and was a role model for many young skaters in SA. Major Saffa support and gees go out from bluntmagza to our extreme sports Olympians competing in Paris this week - skateboarders Brandon Valjalo (men’s street), Boipelo Awuah (women’s street), Dallas Oberholzer (men’s park), and Vincent Leygonie, BMX freestyle park.

The skateboarders are all attending their second Olympics, and Vincent is making his debut at the 2024 Olympics as the first SA freestyle BMXer to ever compete at this level.
