Vans’ new Sandton City concept store in Johannesburg.

Vans, the iconic skate and lifestyle brand, officially launched its latest flagship retail innovation on 20 July—a new store in Sandton City in Johannesburg that expands the brand’s 3.0 concept. Building on the success of its previous location within the same centre, this move to a new space marks an evolution in the brand’s journey and showcases a bold leap in bringing together community, creativity, and cutting-edge experiences.

The store’s unique design reflects Vans’ heritage, while also pushing the boundaries of a traditional retail environment—with separate areas devoted to Skate, MTE (Made for The Elements), Life & Style, Vans Premium and Seasonal Stories, the brand has created pockets of immersive experiences that showcase the best of what Vans has to offer.

Top South African Vans team riders attended the store launch, including left to right Ethan Cairns, photographer Grant McLachlan, Marci Rodrigues and Alex Williams.

In addition, the flagship store will break new ground as the first Vans store to carry skate hard goods that cater to skaters at every level. Skaters will be able to find decks, trucks, wheels, and more from renowned global brands that have—until now—been notoriously difficult to find in Johannesburg.

Highlights included a mural painting by Njabulo Hlophe inspired by local landmarks, a station for creating art on skate decks led by Njabulo, skate-themed treats, mystery discounts on Vans gear and an appearance from the Vans South Africa skate team.

The grand opening was a festival of skate culture and style that brought together a diverse crowd made up of friends of the brand, skateboarders, and winners from Vans’ Instagram competition. The event showcased Vans’ commitment to collaborating with local artists and skaters, giving them a platform to share their talents and connect with a wider audience.

Guests were also gifted goodie bags worth over R2,000 that included Vans accessories in a custom tote bag designed by Njabulo.

The opening of Vans’ flagship store isn’t just about a new physical space, but about creating a hub for the local skate, fashion and creative community—one that celebrates Vans’ core values and Johannesburg skate culture.
